I prefer the hardtop; the only functional downside vs the soft top is ease of removal / installation and forethought. I leave the soft top installed on my car and drive with the hard top most of the time, if it's really hot or I just want to drive with the top down I'll take the hard top off before I leave and put the soft top up if it rains.

Hard top is less noise, ever so slightly better rigidity, slightly more head room (compared to soft top being raised), more weather proof, better visibility (compared to soft top being raised). According to the Spec Miata rules in both SCCA and NASA all "Convertible tops and attaching hardware shall be completely removed. Cars may compete with the Mazda factory detachable hard top in place (latches shall be replaced with positive fasteners)".
Driving with the hardtop on feels like you’re inside a car sized helmet, it’s fookin great. I personally feel claustrophobic in a Miata with a soft top, hate the tiny window, kills visibility.
